Monday's child: what your birth day traditionally means

A 19th-century English nursery rhyme assigned each day of the week a fortune. It's pure folklore — but it's the reason so many people want to know their birth weekday:

  • Monday's child is fair of face
  • Tuesday's child is full of grace
  • Wednesday's child is full of woe
  • Thursday's child has far to go
  • Friday's child is loving and giving
  • Saturday's child works hard for a living
  • Sunday's child is bonny and blithe, good and gay

(Wednesday and Thursday children: the rhyme has been revised many times, and several versions swap the lines around. Choose the version you like best.)

Why weekday births aren't evenly spread

You might expect one seventh of people to be born on each day, but in the United States weekday births significantly outnumber weekend births. Scheduled cesarean deliveries and induced labor are booked on weekdays, so Tuesday through Friday see the most births and Sunday the fewest. If you were born on a weekend, your birth day is a little rarer than average.

How the calendar makes it repeat

The Gregorian calendar repeats exactly every 400 years (146,097 days — which happens to be divisible by 7). Your birthday drifts forward one weekday in ordinary years and jumps two after a leap day, landing on your original birth weekday every 5, 6, or 11 years in an irregular but predictable rhythm. The calculator shows you the next time that happens.

Frequently asked questions

Is this accurate for very old dates?

Yes, for any date in the Gregorian calendar (adopted 1582 in much of Europe; 1752 in the British Empire and American colonies). Dates before adoption used the Julian calendar and can differ.

What day of the week was I born if I was born on February 29?

The calculator handles leap-day births fine — and your birthday-weekday cycle is even more unusual, since your true birthday only appears every four years.

Is my birth date stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
